Meta Glasses Get Major Software Update with Nutrition Tracking and WhatsApp Summaries

Meta has announced a significant spring software update for its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, introducing features including nutrition tracking, WhatsApp message summaries, and display recording capabilities. The update represents Meta’s continued push to make smart eyewear more practical for everyday use.

The nutrition tracking feature will roll out to users aged 18 and older in the United States, with the functionality coming to Meta Ray-Ban Display devices later this summer. This feature allows users to log food and track nutritional information hands-free, a practical addition for health-conscious consumers.

New Capabilities Expand Functionality

Meta Ray-Ban Display owners will finally be able to record their screen content, with output showing the display superimposed on the camera view including any playing audio. This feature addresses one of the most common criticisms of the previous generation—the inability to record what users were seeing through the glasses.

The WhatsApp summaries feature allows users to get quick recaps of longer messages, making it easier to stay on top of conversations without pulling out a phone. Meta and EssilorLuxottica also announced plans to expand smart glasses sales to new countries including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.

Privacy Considerations

The expanded capabilities come with continued privacy questions about wearable cameras and AI. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously noted that “billions of people wear glasses or contacts for vision correction,” positioning smart glasses as a natural evolution of everyday eyewear. However, critics continue to raise concerns about recording in public spaces.

For consumers considering smart glasses, the latest updates offer more practical utility than previous versions, though the balance between features and privacy remains a personal decision.
