Iceland has secured its position as the fastest-growing destination for solo travellers in 2026, according to new research analysing global travel trends. A comprehensive report by Explore Worldwide found that interest in solo travel to Iceland increased by an extraordinary 181% year-on-year—the highest growth rate among all destinations studied.
The Solo Travel Revolution
The research, which analysed over 500 destinations and more than 40,000 monthly searches related to solo travel, paints a clear picture of shifting travel preferences. Global solo travel bookings have increased by 33% over the past year, with more than 40,000 monthly searches now recording interest in solo journeys.
Japan remains the most popular destination for solo travellers, attracting over 67,000 annual solo travel related searches. However, Iceland’s explosive growth trajectory suggests it is quickly becoming the preferred choice for those seeking adventure and solitude in equal measure.
What Makes Iceland Stand Out
The dramatic landscapes—from volcanic terrain and glacial lagoons to Northern Lights displays—offer solo travellers an unparalleled backdrop for self-discovery and adventure. The country’s well-established tourism infrastructure, combined with a reputation for safety and hospitality, makes it an ideal destination for those exploring the world alone.
Other destinations in the top growth rankings include Oman (133%), New Zealand (90%), Slovenia (80%), and Kyrgyzstan (67%), indicating a broader shift toward nature-based and off-the-beaten-path destinations.
A New Era of Independent Travel
The surge in solo travel reflects deeper societal changes, including the rise of remote work that allows people to travel without sacrificing professional commitments. For many, solo travel has become less about loneliness and more about freedom—the ability to set one’s own pace, follow spontaneous decisions, and connect meaningfully with new environments.
As Iceland continues to attract solo adventurers from around the world, local tourism authorities are responding with improved facilities, dedicated solo traveller packages, and enhanced safety protocols to ensure visitors can explore with complete peace of mind.
