A Russian military transport plane crashed into a cliff in the Crimean Peninsula on Tuesday, killing all 29 people aboard in a tragedy that has prompted an investigation into the causes of the disaster. The An-26 aircraft disappeared during a flight over the contested region, with wreckage discovered on a cliff face overlooking the Black Sea.
Initial reports from the Russian Defence Ministry indicated the crash was caused by a technical malfunction, resulting in the deaths of six crewmembers and 23 passengers. However, Russia’s Investigative Committee reported slightly different figures, listing seven crew and 22 passengers among the victims.
Pattern of Military Aviation Incidents
The crash marks the latest in a series of military aviation accidents in Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In December 2025, seven crew members of an An-22 military transport plane were killed in a crash in Russia’s Ivanovo region. Two months prior, a MiG-31 fighter jet crashed in the Lipetsk region, and in April 2025, a Tu-22M3 bomber came down in Irkutsk.
Aviation safety experts have noted the concerning frequency of such incidents, attributing them partly to the increased operational tempo of Russian military aviation during the ongoing conflict and the challenges of maintaining aging aircraft fleets under demanding conditions.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the crash, with aviation specialists examining the aircraft’s maintenance records, flight data, and weather conditions at the time of the incident. The investigation is expected to take several weeks before any definitive conclusions can be drawn about the causes of the disaster.
